He also became one of the first African Americans to work with large-scale computer systems. His government career began as an intern and eventually led to his role as Director of the Management Services Office at the Army Research Laboratory at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Before that, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. After retiring at just 39, Alvin earned a BLS degree from the University of Oklahoma and founded a successful IT and engineering firm—ultimately becoming a millionaire.
