From Coach Party Chaos to Kitchen Antics: Inside Michael Pellegrini’s Certainly Sir. Up Yours!

Indie Temp ()

Hotels are supposed to run on order, routine and good customer service. Guests check in, meals arrive on time, rooms are ready and staff members quietly keep everything moving behind the scenes.

That is not exactly how things work at the Savoy Court Hotel.

In Certainly Sir. Up Yours!, author Michael Pellegrini opens the doors to a fictional family-run seaside hotel where almost every ordinary task has the potential to become a complete disaster. Drawing on his own long experience in hospitality, Pellegrini creates a loud, outrageous and unapologetically adult comedy filled with difficult guests, eccentric employees, practical jokes, family arguments and situations that constantly spiral out of control.

When Three Coaches Arrive at Once

One of the clearest examples of Savoy Court chaos comes when three coachloads of guests arrive at the hotel at the same time. More than 160 people suddenly need rooms, keys, luggage, drinks and answers.

Naturally, almost everything goes wrong.

Bernadette begins handing out incorrect room keys. Some rooms are not ready. Suitcases pile up. Guests become impatient. The phones keep ringing and George Antonopoulos, the domineering hotel owner, tries to bring the growing mess under control. As if that were not enough, the overloaded lift becomes stuck between floors while more guests wait to use it.

Instead of presenting hospitality as polished and glamorous, Pellegrini shows the frantic reality behind the front desk. The result is fast-moving comedy that anyone who has worked with customers may recognize, although hopefully not quite at this level.

The Kitchen Is Even More Dangerous

If reception is chaotic, the Savoy Court kitchen is something else entirely.

The kitchen staff treat practical jokes almost like another part of the job description. Thomas Antonopoulos is particularly skilled at winding people up and the book repeatedly shows pranks escalating far beyond what anyone originally intended.

In one episode, a chef nicknamed Cornetto expects an oven to light automatically. Thomas neglects to explain that it needs to be lit manually, resulting in flames shooting out when the door opens and taking Cornetto’s eyebrows and fringe with them.

And that is only the beginning.

The kitchen chapters are packed with incompetent chefs, mischievous staff, arguments, accidents, ridiculous nicknames and behaviour that would give a modern hotel manager nightmares.

A Hotel Full of Characters

What makes Certainly Sir. Up Yours! memorable is not simply the disasters. It is the people causing, surviving and commenting on them.

Frank Tolley, the ex-RAF narrator, brings his own sarcastic personality to hotel life. He is formal when it suits him, permanently ready with a cutting remark and frequently aided by his hip flask. George attempts to rule the hotel and his family with authority, while Thomas treats almost every situation as an opportunity for another joke.

Around them comes a revolving cast of relatives, waiters, cooks, maintenance workers, entertainers, coach drivers and guests.

Together, they turn the Savoy Court into something far more entertaining than an ordinary seaside hotel.

Michael Pellegrini’s Certainly Sir. Up Yours! is bold, rude, nostalgic and intentionally unfiltered. For readers who enjoy British humour, hospitality stories, workplace madness and characters who rarely behave as expected, this is one hotel worth checking into.
