Have you ever wondered how a childhood memory can become a story that touches generations? Sometimes, the most meaningful children’s books don’t begin with imaginary adventures. They begin with real experiences, unforgettable emotions and lessons learned while growing up.
For Lourdes Fasani, those memories come from her journey as a young Cuban immigrant adjusting to life in America. Drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and career in education, she has created five heartwarming children’s books: Luli’s First Thanksgiving, Luli’s Cafeteria Lunch, Luli’s Sad Farewell, Luli’s First Snowfall and Luli’s First Autumn.
Together, these stories celebrate childhood courage, cultural discovery, family love and the importance of belonging.
From a Cuban Classroom to an American School
Born in Marianao, Cuba, Fasani arrived in the United States in 1961 following the Cuban Revolution. As an eight-year-old entering third grade in Hinsdale, Illinois, she faced a challenge many immigrant children understand: learning to communicate in a classroom where everyone else spoke English.
Imagine trying to make friends, understand instructions and participate in everyday activities without knowing the language!
Yet, these challenges became meaningful parts of her personal journey. Fasani eventually graduated from the University of Southern California and became a bilingual teacher for English learners in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She later served in educational administrative roles.
Her experiences as both an immigrant child and educator offer a valuable perspective on childhood resilience.
Turning Difficult Goodbyes Into Stories of Hope
Every immigration journey carries an emotional story and Fasani captures that beautifully in Luli’s Sad Farewell.
The book follows eight-year-old Luli as she leaves Cuba with her mother and younger brother. Saying goodbye to her beloved grandfather is heartbreaking, but the promise of reuniting with her father in America brings hope.
Through this touching experience, young readers discover that courage doesn’t mean hiding sadness. Sometimes, it means facing uncertainty while holding onto the love and memories that give us strength.
Finding Big Lessons in Small Childhood Moments
What makes Fasani’s storytelling relatable is her ability to transform ordinary experiences into meaningful adventures.
In Luli’s Cafeteria Lunch, unfamiliar school foods become an unexpected challenge. With her mother’s creativity, Luli discovers that even cold milk and broccoli can become enjoyable.
Meanwhile, Luli’s First Autumn introduces colorful leaves, Halloween celebrations and homemade costumes. A generous neighbor helps Luli and her brother join their school’s Halloween parade, showing how kindness creates belonging.
These experiences remind children that adjusting to change happens through small discoveries, patient encouragement and supportive relationships.
Celebrating New Traditions Without Forgetting Old Ones
Moving to another country introduces unfamiliar customs, but it doesn’t erase treasured memories.
In Luli’s First Thanksgiving, a celebration with welcoming neighbors helps Luli’s family discover the meaning of gratitude and togetherness.
Similarly, Luli’s First Snowfall captures the excitement of snowy mornings and Christmas celebrations while honoring cherished Cuban traditions.
Both stories encourage children to appreciate different cultures without losing their connection to their heritage.
