Every day, police officers respond to life-threatening situations. These brave people witness unimaginable tragedies and make split-second decisions that could mean life or death. While they are trained to handle the physical dangers of the job and are often portrayed as courageous and strong in movies and fiction, little attention is given to the mental and emotional toll it takes on them. That is why the mental health of police officers is a topic of growing concern.

Be it their exposure to traumatic events, high-stress situations, or the general demands of law enforcement, it all can take a toll on police officers’ lives, which leads to a higher prevalence of mental health disorders among police officers compared to the general population.

The Weight of the Badge by Vernon Herron sheds light on the silent crisis of mental health among officers.

Herron, a veteran law enforcement officer, speaks from experience. He recalls the emotional burden he carried after many traumatic incidents throughout his career. Despite following protocol and acting in self-defense, the psychological impact of these events was immediate and overwhelming, as he struggled with sleepless nights, paranoia, and an overwhelming sense of guilt. Like many officers, he turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism, hoping to numb the intrusive thoughts.

Police officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. In fact, according to a study, police officers are five times more likely to suffer from PTSD and depression than the general population. Moreover, suicide rates among police officers are significantly higher than the national average, which further highlights the mental health crisis in law enforcement. Moreover, the stigma surrounding mental health in law enforcement is a major barrier to seeking help. As demonstrated by Herron’s discussion of meeting the widow of a police officer who committed suicide, for example, many officers repress their emotions and continue to serve out of fear of being perceived as weak or unfit for duty, only to meet a deadly end.

This daily exposure to violence, suffering, and human cruelty takes its toll, as many

police officers with mental health issues respond to horrific car accidents, violent crimes, and domestic abuse cases with the trauma of those they are trying to help. Without proper mental health resources for law enforcement, this stress accumulates, leading to burnout, emotional numbness, and even destructive behavior.

Moreover, Herron’s personal journey in his memoir highlights the importance of breaking this cycle. The book calls to address mental health disorders in police officers by asking law enforcement agencies to implement strategies to improve mental health and prevent disorders is crucial. These strategies can include everything from improving work-life balance to implementing mental health policies within law enforcement agencies, as they can help create a healthier, more supportive work environment for officers. Moreover, Herron also shares how professional help and therapy can be healthier coping mechanisms and how advocating for depression in police officers may significantly tackle the issues.

In the end, if police departments want to reduce the rising rates of officer suicides and burnout, they must change their approach. They should approach the mental health of police officers with care. It is not enough to provide a phone number for officers to call when they are in crisis. They must take proactive steps to create a culture where every police officer is supported to prevent burnout, mental issues, and, worse, suicide. They should acknowledge that the mental health crisis among police officers is real, urgent, and preventable.
